Health Nuts and The Generally Sick
Ok, Peace Corp The Gambia (PCTG) does a great job of taking care of us. They give us an awesome med kit that is fully stocked with all kinds of fun treats. They will hook us up with Gatorade, (your hard earned tax dollars at work my friends) and believe me I used to think it was silly of them to give us Gatorade. I have come to realize that it can literally be a life savor, you just have to dilute it a bunch. Too much sugar.
Also PCTG gives us a free dental exam once a year. I would not know about it yet, but I foresee cavities in my future. They cook with a lot of sugar here, also they are Attaya addicts. Attaya is a green tea that is imported from China (I think). When you make it you put in 3 shot glasses of water, 1 shot glass of tea leaves and 1 shot glass of sugar. Each shot glass of tea leaves is good for 3 rounds, and when you sit to drink Attaya, especially with your family you could and probably should sit and drink all three rounds of Attaya. You know the whole experience the culture and get to know your neighbors thing. So yea I foresee a drill and some fillings in my future.
Finally should any medical emergencies arise I have the ability to call the duty nurse and anytime. Day or night. 365. So yea as far as health is concerned they have got me covered. I have still managed to catch a cold twice since I came here and I have also had food poisoning twice, but I am still strong and healthy. So far I have not had anything that people don’t get in the states, the only hard part here is it is 100 degrees all the time so laying in bed all day with a fever just sucks.

Glad to hear you have been relatively healthy. The man I talked to at Truman who was one of the original volunteers, said everyone gets sick. Keep talking your vitamins and Gatorade. Keep the electrolytes stable. Maybe the gum will help with the extra sugar. If you can’t get your teeth brushed, chewing the gum may help a little bit. Love, Mom
