Books
Ok so I have lots of time to read books, so if you want to have conversations about books. I am going to list the ones I have read while at site and I will give you my thoughts. Most of the books will fall in one of 2 categories. One category is going to being educational/ spiritual growth books. The other is just fun reads that keep me entertained, and they also keep me from going ballistic in my village and just losing my mind. Again this is the opinion of Matt Carte not Peace Corp and their view and policies are not reflected in this web site. Also they are not endorsing or condoning any books found on this page.
Spiritual and Personal Growth Books
“How People Grow” I don’t remember who wrote it. 4 of 5 in my book.
This is a very good book in my opinion. It was kind of a hard read because everything the book says about growth, I am in violation. One of the main topics is growth occurs in a group, and I have to admit that I fully agree with his opinion. I have experience great growth over the last two years and I give full credit to the people I surrounded myself with. Then what did I do, went and left the group and joined Peace Corp. I don’t regret either decision, to read the book or join Peace Corp, just saying it was a hard read for me, to be convicted on every page.
“Mere Christianity” C. S. Lewis 5 of 5
Now I was not sure I would like this book. I have heard that C. S. Lewis can be hard to follow and talk straight over the head, and I must say that there are parts of this book that went straight over my head. I still recommend this book to everyone. I would venture that everybody could read this book and everybody would walk away with something different that touched them. I recommend if you want to get a lot out of this book have a good background in theology and how several of the arguments go when it comes to different aspects of Christianity. Not saying it is a requirement, but it will make reading this book easier if you have foundation before going after this book. Again though don’t let me discourage you from reading this book it is that good.
Fun Books
“Left Behind” I don’t remember who wrote it. 4.5 of 5
This is a fun book to read. I found it to be entertaining and a good quick read. Now I know some of you are saying that it is not a quick read at 450 pages. Believe me I cruised through this book in less than 3 weeks, so somebody that reads even at a decent pace will have no problem doing it faster. For those of you that don’t know ( I was one of them) “Left Behind” is about the 2nd coming of Christ and the time leading up to said event. Just so you know.
“Second Genesis” Don’t remember. 2.5 of 5
This book is kind of a weird read. It has some really cool concepts, but any entertainment value of the book gets weighed down by big and unnecessary medical terms. As far as plot speed and character development, well this book takes a while to get going about half the book. Characters in this book make me laugh. It seems that everybody has just the right skills to make the plot work. I don’t know it just seemed too neat and tidy. Also I don’t want to spoil the ending, but I did not like it.

Matt, I just love picturing you reading Left Behind in Gambia in 2010, I’m not sure why.
Your mom beat me to the punch-but I was also wondering if you wanted some more books sent. I can coordinate with your mom so we don’t by the same thing, or you can give her a list and I could just surprise you!
Let us know-I would love to send a care package and it would kick me in gear to mailing you-I currently have a letter for you that has not been sent :S hopefully I get it out soon so you can get it within the next couple of months-fingers crossed. Oh and any art requests please let me know-I would so enjoy making that part of your care package
*hugs*
Are you needing more books sent? Any special authors or titles? Kris Carte and Rolf both gave me Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom. He is the same guy who wrote Tuesdays with Morrie.
